You try to balance your popcorn and drink while fumbling for a ticket, you squint to find your movie theatre seat in the dark and squeeze by a bunch of people because you prefer the middle seat. After what feels like an eternity, you finally sit down in the stuffy and unbelievably cold airconed room and wish your seat had more leg room. Well how about relaxing outside, with legs stretched under the Cape Town night sky and enjoying one of your all-time favourite movies instead of a stressful indoor cinema experience? We prefer the latter.

You’ll be able to bring your own snacks (or save yourself the trouble and buy some before the movie), and enjoy them while you eat in the comfort of your own car or on a blanket outside. You deserve a stress-free movie night and here are some of the best outdoor movie theatres to make your stress-free movie experience a reality:

1 THE PINK FLAMINGO ROOFTOP CINEMA

The Grand Daddy Hotel in the CBD has a rooftop outdoor movie theatre, perfect for a night under the Cape Town stars. The Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema has regular film screenings that are set in the world’s only rooftop trailer park hotel.

Once you book your movie tickets, you’ll be able to choose from three seating options: General Seating on chairs, the Love Seat for a romantic night with your partner and the Couch for stretched out relaxation and pure enjoyment. Each ticket includes a welcome drink, bag of sweets and popcorn. You can even indulge in a yummy picnic basket for two at an extra cost.

What to pack: Nothing at all! The Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema provides all your blanket and snacks needs, you just need to bring yourself.

Get ready to escape into a different dimension at the Galileo Open Air Cinema. While surrounded by the natural beauty of the Cape, grab your cosy blanket, sit down and enjoy some classic films.

The movie venues will vary between three locations: The Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville, Kirstenbosch Gardens and various estates in the Cape Winelands. Rent a picnic blanket or some camping chairs and get comfy while you munch on some snacks and laugh or cry the night away, depending on your movie of choice. Read our Galileo Open Air Cinema article for specific dates, times and venues where you can catch the best blockbusters.

What to pack: Bring blankets, camp chairs and delicious snacks along, if you prefer not to rent movie equipment from the movie theatre.

3 SHORT & SWEET FILM EXPERIENCE

If you’re looking for a venue to watch screenings of the best short films, then the Short & Sweet film experience is definitely for you!

The Short & Sweet movie theatre is different to the above mentioned theatres. This theatre is a drive-in so you’ll be able to recline your seat and watch films from the comfort of your own car. Majority of the Short & Sweet short films are screened at the drive-in of the Good Hope Seminary Junior School.

What to pack: Blankets, pillows and all sorts of yummy snacks to enjoy while watching the movie.
