The South African short film The Last Ranger has gained international acclaim, winning multiple awards at prestigious film festivals and securing a spot in the race for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2025 Academy Awards, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Directed by Cindy Lee and written and produced by Darwin Shaw, Will Hawkes and David S. Lee, The Last Ranger portrays rhino poaching and conservation in South Africa and is the second installment in the When The World Stopped anthology.
When The World Stopped is a scripted anthology series based on true-life dramas uncovered during the social and cultural upheaval of the pandemic.
Since its release, The Last Ranger has received multiple accolades, including Best Narrative Short Film at the Pan African Film Festival, San Diego International Film Festival and Cordillera Film Festival, qualifying it for Oscar contention for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2025 Academy Awards.
The Last Ranger follows a young South African girl who, while being introduced to a game reserve by the last remaining ranger, is caught in a poacher ambush and uncovers a dark secret during the battle to save the rhinos.
Director Cindy Lee says the film is not only about the horrors of rhino poaching but also about the Xhosa communities that surround the reserves.
‘Looking for meaningful work near their families, many Xhosa women are signing up to be game rangers in these reserves.’
‘They have become highly effective caregivers and fierce protectors of these magnificent creatures.’
‘Within our wildlife conservation film is a female empowerment story about a precocious young Xhosa girl who discovers her destiny as a powerful warrior.’
‘Hopefully her story will inspire young women to believe in their ability to protect what is important to them,’ adds Lee.
The Thanda Choir collaborated with internationally acclaimed composer John Powell to create a powerful and unique sound that underlines the raw intensity of the film.
The music in the film uses a combination of live traditional instrumentation and voice to augment the emotional journey of the characters.
