With the school holidays here, keeping kids entertained can feel like a challenge. Luckily, there’s a great selection of new films currently showing that are sure to capture their attention.
Whether you’re heading to the cinema or planning a movie day at home, these picks are perfect for keeping little ones engaged over the school break from 27 March to 7 April.
Rise of the Guardians
While most kids have certainly seen all the Disney movies, DreamWorks’ 2012 film, Rise of the Guardians, might be one they’ve missed. Featuring characters like Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and the Easter Bunny, the film follows Jack Frost and his friends as he tries to stop the Boogeyman from destroying children’s beliefs.
The film would be a great way to celebrate Easter, with the Galileo Open-Air cinema putting on a special screening. Tickets for the event are available here.

Wonka
The Easter Holidays wouldn’t be complete without plenty of chocolate, and no film celebrates chocolate better than Wonka. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the iconic character, the 2023 film follows young Willy Wonka on his journey to becoming the iconic chocolate maker.
While this film is available to stream on Prime Video, the Galileo Open-Air cinema is also giving a special screening, which would be a great way to take your kids on a night out.

The Magic Faraway Tree
If you’re looking to take your kids out to the cinema, the new film, The Magic Faraway Tree, is a good option. Based on the novel by Enid Blyton, the film follows a family moving to the English countryside, with the kids finding a magical world in the surrounding forest.
The film features a star-studded cast, including Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Claire Foy (The Crown), Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) and Jennifer Saunders. (Shrek 2)

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive success, and its highly anticipated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, will premiere during the school holidays. The new animated film will follow Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad as they team up with Yoshi for an epic adventure across outer space.
If your kids need a rewatch of the first film in preparation for the sequel, it is available to rent on Apple TV for R34.99.

Hoppers
Another great cinema pick, Pixar has added a new film to their extensive catalogue: Hoppers. The new sci-fi comedy follows Mabel (Piper Curda), a student who places her consciousness into a robotic beaver. Pixar always delivers quality family-friendly cinema, and Hoppers is no exception, standing at a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Other recent Pixar films are available to stream on Disney+, including Elio (2025) and Inside Out 2 (2024).
