Darries, known equally for his engaging presence on air and his genuine connection with listeners across the Western Cape, leaves behind a legacy that resonates deeply with many.
Having bravely battled cardiomyopathy, a hereditary heart condition that claimed the lives of several family members, Darries was candid about his health journey.
His openness served to raise awareness and provide support to others grappling with similar challenges. Recently, however, his health took a dire turn, with his heart functioning at a mere ten to 15 percent capacity.
In his fight for survival, he was placed on a transplant list while waiting for a life-saving procedure.
In a heartfelt statement, Good Hope FM expressed their profound sadness at the loss of their colleague:
‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of our own, Lorenzo Darries, who left us following a courageous battle with heart disease. Lorenzo was not just a presenter, but a vibrant broadcaster, a kind and passionate colleague, and more importantly, a beautiful human being.’
According to Lorenzo’s family, he suffered a stroke just before his passing in the early hours of the morning in hospital.
Born and raised in Cape Town’s diverse Cape Flats, Lorenzo developed a profound love for sport and community. He completed an Accounting Programme at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2019, and his journey into broadcasting began when he joined campus radio.
Although he didn’t reach the finals of the Good Hope FM Campus DJ Search, his remarkable talent caught the attention of the station, leading to his joining in February 2020.
A consummate radio professional, Lorenzo quickly became a familiar voice in the community, making significant contributions to shows such as Weekend Sports WarmUp, Play-By-Play, and The Great Drive with Kyeezi and Celest Anthony.
His role extended beyond radio, reaching into television as a producer for S3 Expresso, where his infectious energy and professionalism shone bright both on-screen and behind the scenes.
Lorenzo’s personal narrative of resilience stood out; he shared his experience with heart disease, illustrating the fight for life with a courage that inspired many. Proudly calling his heart an ‘iron heart,’ he remained optimistic and thankful even in the face of adversity, encouraging others to live fully and cherish every moment.
His colleagues have expressed their fond memories, recalling him as a radiant presence who lit up every room with laughter and warmth.
‘It’s impossible to overstate the impression that Lorenzo left on the hearts and lives of those who had the privilege of meeting and knowing him,’ said Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for Good Hope FM and 5FM.
‘As Cape Town’s Original, Good Hope FM honours his legacy with deep respect and immense gratitude,’
