The Cape Town Opera has invited young singers, between the ages of nine to 15 years, from the Cape Metro to join the upcoming auditions for its Children’s Chorus and Foundation Studio.
This project-based chorus rehearses ‘only a few weeks prior’ to each production or concert, which makes for the ideal opportunity for young talent to be able to ‘experience the thrill’ of performing without commitment that lasts year-long, as reported by IOL.

The closing date for sign-ups is on August 23 and it is considered beneficial if applicants have ‘at least one year’ of choral experience.
In addition, stage experience is ‘not required’ and singers may audition with one or two contrasting arias or songs, with or without accompaniment.
Applicants are required to bring two copies of sheet music for the selection panel, as well as the accompanist. They will then receive a scheduled audition date and time. It is important to note that no walk-ins will be accepted.
Auditions will then take place at the Artscape Theatre Centre on August 29 at 3pm.
The Cape Town Opera Youth Development and Education department has also announced audition calls, more specifically for high school learners of all voice types from grades eight to 10, to audition.
This programme aims to ‘prepare students for tertiary education’ in opera and classical singing by enhancing their singing and music theory skills.
Meanwhile, the Foundation Studio has also provided music literacy courses that ‘may not be presented’ at their respective schools and are primarily aimed at students from disadvantaged communities.
Vocal and theory lessons are offered weekly by the programme, along with keyboard studies, and aural training.
‘We are excited to open auditions for the Cape Town Opera Children’s Chorus and Foundation Studio. These two programmes provide invaluable opportunities for young singers to develop their talents and gain exposure to the world of opera,’ said Madré Loubser, Head of Youth Development and Education at Cape Town Opera.
‘We are particularly committed to supporting learners through our Foundation Studio, which aims to give high school learners access to music literacy courses that their schools cannot offer,’ Loubser added.
‘The primary goal of the Foundation Studio is to ensure that learners have the necessary skills to enter tertiary education institutions.’
