The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra lit up Cape Town City Hall on a memorable evening of symphonic brilliance, as audiences were treated to a powerful programme featuring Mendelssohn, Bartók, and a showcase of rising and established South African talent.
The concert, conducted by acclaimed maestro Nicholas Chalmers, drew an enthusiastic response from a packed hall, reaffirming the orchestra’s standing as one of South Africa’s leading cultural institutions. The evening formed part of the orchestra’s ongoing 2026 season at the historic venue, known for its rich acoustics and long-standing musical heritage.

A night of choral and orchestral excellence
The performance of Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang elevated by the collaboration between the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and visiting choirs Afri-Arts and VOX Cape Town, whose combined sound filled the hall with striking energy and precision.
The evening also featured a standout solo performance by violist Petrus Coetzee, whose interpretation of Bartók’s Viola Concerto earned a warm and sustained ovation from the Cape Town audience.
Young musicians from the CPYWE delivered a spirited curtain-raiser under the baton of conductor Charlene Verster, offering a glimpse into the next generation of orchestral talent in the city.
Soloists Jason Atherton, Siphamandla Moyake, Nobulumko Mngxekeza, and Zorada Temmingh contributed to the richness of the programme, each adding depth and character to a performance that balanced tradition with youthful dynamism.
