Film critics would call this movie a psychological thriller, but I call it trippy, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido. I love films that can make me think: why did the director decide to use that shot, or what’s the message behind that image? If you hate allowing your mind to wander during a film, contemplating the endless questions of childbirth and infertility, then False Positive is not for you.
I initially did a little happy dance when I saw the Kween herself was starring in this film – Ilana Glazer and rejoiced at the fact that I would have a fun Friday night comedy fest to indulge in. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
False Positive follows advertising exec Lucy (Ilana Glazer), who along with her husband Adrian (Justin Theroux), decides to seek the help of acclaimed fertility doctor Dr John Hindle (Pierce Brosnan) to help them get pregnant.
Along with Glazer, John Lee helped to develop this screenplay and finds himself behind the camera as well. Lee does a terrific job of utilising shots that perfectly meld reality with dreams which ensures the viewer is as confused as Lucy feels, adding to the creepiness of the film.
While the movie did a fantastic job of keeping me guessing and instilling a sense of unease, it felt as though it lacked oomph, with certain scenes having no point other than to confuse the audience.
Unfortunately, this movie felt like finally going on a date with the attractive rugby player at your high school but then sadly finding out that he lacks any sort of substance (or brain cells). You can force yourself to like him, but that just won’t do.
Despite this, False Positive still has moments of surreal tension and is a good movie to watch if there’s nothing great on Netflix. Glazer and Brosnan do a killer job of trying to hold the film together, and that alone is worthy of a watch, in my opinion.
