If you love the idea of escaping into a filmic fantasy world while surrounded by the outdoor beauty of the Mother City, then read on.
The Galileo Open Air Cinema is holding a new season of blockbuster movies from 31 October 2016 to 29 April next year. It has a variety of films scheduled, from classics like The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Wizard of Oz, spine chillers like The Omen, The Conjuring, Scream and The Ring, and rom-coms like Love Actually, (500) Days of Summer and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Musicals, actions, tearjerkers and side splitting comedies are also on the lineup. For the full lineup click here.
Venues for the movie screenings change according to the days on which they are held. The Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville will be the venue on Tuesdays (excluding Valentine’s Day), Kirstenbosch Gardens on Wednesdays, the V&A Waterfront on Thursdays, and various estates in the Cape Winelands on Saturdays. Every Friday screening will be at a different venue.
On Sundays, the cinema moves to Kelvin Grove in Newlands for family entertainment. You can treat the kiddies to screenings of Finding Nemo, Frozen, Toy Story, and 2016’s The Jungle Book, among other family-friendly classics. On these days, face painters, jumping castles, play areas and experienced child minders will be on hand to keep the kids entertained before screenings.
There are also three special screenings to take note of. As 31 October is Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street is the season’s opening flick, and on Christmas the whole family can gather to watch Elf. Both these shows will be at Kirstensbosch Gardens. On Valentine’s Day, happy couples can cuddle up and watch When Harry Met Sally… at Nooitgedacht Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.
Doors open at 6 pm on weekdays, 5 pm on Saturdays, and 4 pm on Sundays. Screenings begin a while later so audience members have time settle in, grab a drink or a bite of enticing artisanal food, enjoy some music and interactive games, and maybe have a fun photo session. There are also blankets and backrests for rent.
Of course, weather can be a downer for events like these, and updates will be posted in the morning on screening days. But if clear skies are on the horizon, then be sure to come through for some movie magic.
