The furry face of thousands of memes, social media sensation Grumpy Cat, has tragically passed away at the age of seven as a result of a urinary tract infection. The famous feline died on Tuesday, May 14 in the arms of her loving mother Tabatha.

“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome,” Tabatha said in a statement. “Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”

Grumpy Cat’s Instagram profile has more than 2.4-million followers, and her Twitter profile 1.5-million.

Nicknamed Grumpy by her family, she lived in Arizona with her family, and first shot to fame after uncle, Bryan, posted a photo of her on Reddit – which promptly went viral.

Masses of memes incorporating Grumpy’s face followed, many of which poked fun at the cat’s distinctive appearance, which her owners said was likely due to feline dwarfism.

In March, American fragrance company Demeter released a limited edition “Kitten Fur” scent in collaboration with Grumpy Cat.
