The third season of HBO’s House of the Dragon premiered on 21 June, garnering positive reviews and audience praise, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The Game of Thrones prequel has returned to the small screen, with HBO dropping new episodes every Sunday night. However, South African fans have shared their frustrations online over not being able to find the series on any broadcast or streaming platform.

While the second season saw more mixed reviews than the widely beloved first season, the third season has seen a massive increase in praise from both fans and critics. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke continue to deliver outstanding performances as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, respectively, with the ensemble cast consistently keeping up.

The first episode in particular, ‘Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood‘ featured a massive naval battle sequence that reportedly took 14 months of production. The battle sequence lasts throughout the first episode, with moments that are sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

The second episode, ‘Queen’s Landing’ continues the momentum, with some massive twists that have certainly change the status quo of the entire series moving forward.

While the series has yet to reach the massive success of Game of Thrones, it is arguably one of the biggest shows in pop culture right now. Despite this, however, the series is currently unavailable to watch in South Africa.

The first two seasons of House of the Dragon, along with all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, released on Showmax within 24 hours of its international release. With the recent Showmax shutdown, fans across the country have struggled to find a new place to watch the series.

While DStv aired the first two seasons when they aired on M-Net, the broadcaster has reportedly ended its deal with HBO, meaning that the new season won’t be airing in the foreseeable future.

‘The availability of individual series, like House of the Dragon, is subject to ongoing studio licensing and distribution agreements,’ the MultiChoice Group said. ‘There is nothing further to announce at this stage, and any updates will be shared through the usual channels.’

Fans across social media platforms have expressed their frustrations over the series, along with several other HBO originals, being nearly impossible to legally find. One user, @suveshan_n on X posted, ‘The fact that the new season of house of the dragon – which is genuinely one of the biggest shows at the moment , isn’t airing on dstv is a CRIME.’

While the loss of Showmax came after the acquisition of Multichoice by Canal+,  the French streamer has yet to officially launch in South Africa.
