Cape Town’s independent theatre scene is set to welcome back one of its most talked-about new productions when I Can’t Speak for Freddy returns to the stage this August after selling out its debut run last year, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The one-act South African drama will be performed at the Homecoming Centre in District Six from 18 to 23 August, before moving to The Outlore Base in Cape Town’s city centre for a second, more intimate run from 25 to 28 August.
Presented by newly launched First Light Theatre Co., the production marks the next chapter for a play that has steadily built a reputation through word of mouth following its successful 2025 premiere.
Written by actor Alyssa Dionne, who also stars in the production alongside Matthew Vey, I Can’t Speak for Freddy centres on a young playwright looking back on her years at drama school and the complicated relationship she shared with her closest friend, Freddy.
As both characters chase their artistic ambitions, their friendship is tested by emotional vulnerability, blurred romantic feelings and the influence of a manipulative head of drama. The result is an intimate story exploring love, loyalty, grief and the lasting impact of words left unspoken.
Despite its emotionally rich narrative, the production relies on minimal staging, using only a handful of set pieces and lighting to drive the story rather than elaborate scenery.
Director Morné Visser believes audiences connect with the production because it reflects experiences many people recognise.

Visser added that the connection between the two lead performers remains the emotional heart of the production. ‘Their energy feels genuine, unfiltered and unmanufactured, drawing you in and holding you there till the lights go out.’
Cape Town has seen growing support for locally written productions in recent years, with smaller venues and independent theatre companies increasingly attracting audiences looking for original South African storytelling.
The return of I Can’t Speak for Freddy after a sold-out first season reflects that trend, particularly as new productions continue finding audiences through social media recommendations and positive reviews rather than large commercial marketing campaigns.
The play’s debut season also earned praise from theatre critics. Reviewer Claire Ellenbogen described it as ‘a striking piece of contemporary theatre that lingers long after the lights fade,’ highlighting its writing, inventive staging and committed performances.
For playwright Alyssa Dionne, the production also represents her first original stage work, while First Light Theatre Co. launches its journey as a new Cape Town-based theatre company with this season.
