Dubbed the biggest awards show of the year, Kfm 94.5 invited the people of Cape Town to vote across 30 categories for the 2022 Best of the Cape Awards. No funny business, just you choosing the Mother City’s finest. And Cape {town} Etc is adding to the gees by proudly supporting each winner.
Stay tuned: over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a full feature story on each of your favourites. The ultimate one-man band hails from Kommetjie. This is Cape Town’s ‘Best Local Musician in Cape Town’:
The best local musician: Jeremy Loops
Hailing from Kommetjie, Cape Town, Jeremy Hewitt (38) – AKA Jeremy Loops – has been serving South Africans and the world good music since 2011, when he released his debut, self-titled EP.
Leading up to his professional career, he worked abroad on yachts where he spent a lot of quality time with his guitar. A loop pedal became all the bandmates he needed.
Loops is also a passionate environmentalist – a quality that indirectly kicked off his journey in music.
When he returned back to the Mother City from his travels, he founded what’s become one of the most celebrated ‘green’ organisations in the country: Greenpop. It’s all about planting trees, and at the first-ever event (and after planting 1000 trees) he decided to celebrate by taking the stage. This was his first gig. It’s been beats and boogies ever since.
After releasing Jeremy Loops, he and other celebrated local musicians – namely Motheo Moleko and Jamie Faull – toured hard, playing at major festivals in South Africa and abroad.
His signature sound typically falls into the modern-folk genre, but Loops also borrows elements from hip-hop, electronica, and traditional African music. And people love it, as validated by winning the MK Male Solo Artist of the Year award in 2013 and the award for Best Live Act at the same ceremony in 2014.
Also in 2014, he released his album, Trading Change, which features the hit track Down South. It immediately topped the iTunes South Africa chart, and Mzanzi had Loops looping on repeat.

Loops’ career has been on the fast track ever since, conquering not only South African, but international ears with bangers like Waves and My People. Entitled Continental Drift, his own headline tour of Europe launched in early 2016. Abroad, he’s collaborated with some major international artists, including the likes of Ed Sheeren.
He’s currently touring overseas, with upcoming shows in Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Hamberg, London, Paris and beyond. Loops released his latest album earlier this year, called Heard You Got Love. Heard right! Cape Town loves Loops’ loops – and we can’t wait to have him back in town, gracing the stage at our beloved Kirstenbosch Gardens again.
