The newest music icon biopic, Michael, has hit the big screen. Releasing 24 April, the film has done incredibly well in its first weekend, garnering a worldwide Box Office of $217 million.
The biographical film explores the life of music icon Michael Jackson, brought to life by the late singer’s real-life nephew, Jafaar Jackson. The movie not only dives into the life behind Jackson’s stage persona, but also delivers recreations of his iconic performances and music videos.
Music icon biopics have been a staple on screen in the past decade, with many trying to recapture the success of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), which garnered a worldwide Box Office of $903 million throughout its theatrical run.

It is evident that Michael is setting a new record for the biopic, earning more in its first weekend than other films’ entire theatrical run. Variety reports that Michael has already beaten the previous record held by Straight Outta Compton for opening weekend earnings.

While critical reviews for the film are mixed, it is evident that it is a huge hit with the general public. This weekend saw a lot of hype for the film across social media, with videos full of people going to see the Michael movie, some even in costume.

Michael also currently stands at the second-highest earning debut of 2026 thus far, second only to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which earned a worldwide box office of $372.5 million.
