As Cape Town’s movie-going crowd prepares for the festive rush, a familiar corner of Cavendish Square is getting a fresh shot of energy.
Nu Metro is stepping into the cinema space previously run by Ster-Kinekor, setting the stage for a new chapter in Claremont’s entertainment scene.
The company confirms it will officially open the revamped cinema on 15 December, several months after Ster-Kinekor’s exit from the mall.
In communication shared with invited guests, highlighted by phrasing that one industry insider described as ‘confident and celebratory’, Nu Metro promised that ‘Nu Metro Cavendish Square is redefining the rules of movie magic.’

While the chain has already used this takeover model in other locations, including Bedford Square and the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, film fans are waiting to see whether Cavendish will receive the same high-end treatment introduced at those sites.
Insights shared through MyBroadband’s reporting indicate that Nu Metro’s recent move at Gateway provides clues.
There, the company installed South Africa’s first 270-degree ScreenX auditorium, added VIP Premiere Cinemas, and refurbished nine theatres to offer a panoramic three-wall format.
The Gateway complex also includes 4DX, Scene Xtreme, and a dedicated Kidz Cinema, showing the company’s push toward immersive and premium viewing.
Nu Metro senior marketing manager Beverley Govender said the Gateway transformation represents more than a facelift.
‘Nu Metro Gateway is more than just a cinema, it’s a showcase of our brand’s evolution. From the sleek new design to the immersive formats, every detail reflects our commitment to delivering unforgettable entertainment.’
Govender added that the company sees this approach as a benchmark for the future of cinema in South Africa.
While Nu Metro has not yet confirmed whether Cavendish will mirror the Gateway upgrade, the company’s broader pattern points to a strategy focused on premium formats, redesigned interiors, and expanded hospitality features, including reclining leather chairs, exclusive lounges, and curated menus.
