The South African entertainment industry is in mourning following the untimely death of Presley Chweneyagae, the acclaimed actor best known for his powerful portrayal in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi and Cobra on Mzansi Magic’s The River, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Born on October 19, 1984, in Mafikeng, North West Province, Chweneyagae’s passion for the arts ignited at an early age.
His beginnings in drama classes at the North West Arts Council, now recognised as the Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation, provided the foundation for an extraordinary career filled with storytelling, expression, and excellence.
Chweneyagae stormed onto the international stage in 2005 with Tsotsi, a role that not only captivated audiences around the globe but also contributed to South Africa winning its first-ever Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

His career was marked by diverse and impactful performances across theatre, television, and film. Chweneyagae earned acclaim for his roles in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) and the award-winning television series The River (2018).
He was not only an actor but a commanding stage presence, delivering unforgettable performances in various classics, including:
- Hamlet in Hamlet
- Mark Antony in Julius Caesar
- Bottom and Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream
- Orestes in Dikeledi (an adaptation of Electra)
- Numerous roles in productions like Relativity, Urban Reality, Jack in the Box, and Beautiful Things
Beyond acting, Chweneyagae’s creativity flourished as a writer and director, co-authoring the internationally acclaimed stage play Relativity alongside Paul Grootboom, later published by STE Publishers.
