South African superstar Tyla managed to turn a Joburg matriculant’s wildest dream into reality when she surprised him at his matric dance, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Mollwane (Mo) Madiba had taken to TikTok in February with a bold request, using the hashtag #MOandTYLAForMD, seeking Tyla as his date. Little did he know that his video would resonate not just within South Africa but across the globe, captivating the hearts of many along the way.
Starting as a hopeful plea, Mo’s video caught the attention of 5FM, one of South Africa’s premier youth radio stations. The initiative went viral, prompting engagement from listeners who rallied support for Mo’s ambitious dream to accompany an international sensation to his matric dance.
Despite the overwhelming excitement, weeks of anticipation brought a bittersweet response: Tyla expressed her appreciation for Mo’s request but regrettably could not attend the event.
Yet, on the night of the grand celebration held at St. Stithians Boys’ College, the atmosphere was anything but deflated. Dressed to the nines in true glitzy fashion, Mo was thrilled that he had at least garnered the attention of the global music star, thanks to the relentless support from 5FM and the listening public.
As festivities kicked off in the elegant Mears Hall, the crowd buzzed with excitement, especially surrounding the news of what had come to be the most talked-about topic of the evening: ‘What would Tyla do to show she’s there in spirit?’
The anticipation grew when Tyla’s brand-new song, ‘Is it,’ made its debut, electrifying the crowd.
Roars of applause and cheers erupted, providing an unexpected highlight for Mo and his classmates.
Just when guests thought the night couldn’t get any better, 5FM unveiled its best-kept secret. With a mix of clever planning and strategic communication, South Africa’s hottest new talent was revealed to be present all the way from Edenvale, directly onto the dancefloor.
The room erupted as Tyla stepped in, her presence transforming the already magical night into an unforgettable experience for all in attendance, especially for a starstruck Mo.
“From the USA to South Africa! I’m so grateful to the 5FM team you guys honestly revived this moment for me. It’s just been an amazing thing. It’s going down in the history books!’ Mo exclaimed, brimming with excitement.
‘I was literally dateless because I asked Tyla… and then Tyla pulled through! I’ll never forget it! On the dancefloor, she said, ‘Come, we’re singing!’ and shouted ‘Mollwane and Tyla for MD!’ I heard her say that I’m a gentleman, by the way. Thank you, Tyla!’
Business Manager for 5FM, Masi Mdingane reflected on the touching moments, ‘When we saw Mo’s video, we knew we had to get involved and pull all the strings we can. This is what 5FM is about moving the youth of SA, celebrating their courage, and amplifying the voices and stories that inspire the nation,’
