That third entry moves Tyla ahead of the long-standing benchmark set by the late Miriam Makeba, whose 1967 hit ‘Pata Pata’ peaked at number 12 on the Hot 100. The milestone matters for South African music. Few artists from the country have ever reached the US pop chart (Magzter).
‘Chanel’ has also topped the US Afrobeats chart and the UK Afrobeats chart in the same week. Those runs show just how quickly the single has spread across playlists and radio.

On streaming platforms, the song climbed the global Spotify chart within weeks of release and logged tens of millions of plays in its early window. That momentum helped push the song onto international playlists and into new audiences.
Fans and industry figures praised Tyla on social media. Many said the achievement shows the growing global appetite for South African voices. The singer’s rise joins a small, proud list of South Africans who have made a lasting mark on global charts.
