Adventure enthusiasts and film lovers are gearing up for the return of the Cape Town Adventure Film Festival, which kicks off on 17 October with what organisers are calling their biggest programme yet.
The festival will span 15 nights across four different venues, featuring more than 50 films that celebrate what they describe as ‘epic stories of courage, nature and human spirit.’
Now in its 2025 edition, the festival has grown from what Time Out characterised as ‘a niche gathering’ into a cornerstone of South Africa’s cinematic scene.

This year’s event will showcase 21 locally produced films alongside international selections, with programming designed to appeal to specific adventure communities while also offering mixed programmes for general audiences, as noted by EWN.
The festival will use four distinct venues across the city, including Ster-Kinekor at the V&A Waterfront for opening night, with additional screenings at the Labia Theatre, Jack Black’s Taproom in Diep River, and the Orms Cape Town School of Photography. The expanded venue line-up reflects the event’s growth since its early days.
A key innovation this year involves themed community nights focused on specific adventure disciplines. The schedule includes Bike, Climb, Conservation, Run, Surf and Women nights, allowing outdoor enthusiasts to slot straight into their preferred adventure.
Notable films in this year’s selection include Girl Climber, following Emily Harrington’s El Capitan ascent; Women and the Wind, documenting three sailors crossing the North Atlantic; and Anytime, an Emmy Award-winning freeride mountain biking film.
