The revelation of a large boost in prize money for the main event has further fuelled the enthusiasm. Runners in the Grade 1 feature, billed as the country’s finest weight-for-age mile, will vie for R3 million in rewards, a 50% increase over the previous year.
The L’Ormarins King’s Plate (LKP), widely regarded as the opening social event of the Cape Summer Season, is the first Grade 1 feature race meeting of the New Year and is named after the original silver plate presented to the winner by Queen Victoria following the race’s inaugural run in 1861.
The race is rich in history, with former winners including champion sires Jet Master and Gimmethegreenlight, as well as multiple Equus award winners Pocket Power, Do It Again, Jet Dark, and Charles Dickens.
The L’Ormarins King’s Plate not only features some of the country’s top racehorses, but it also honours the elegance and sophistication associated with historic race events like Royal Ascot, the Goodwood Festival, and the Kentucky Derby.
Patrons are urged to upgrade their daytime wear and join in celebration of racing legacy and contemporary elegance, thanks to the venue’s classic blue and white dress code.
As the event approaches, further race card and hospitality packages will be released in the following weeks, including Stud Club and Style Village tickets, which will go on sale at the end of November.
