The buzz surrounding the upcoming Cape Town Carnival is palpable – and we at Cape {town} Etc were lucky enough to get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the magic in the making.
With just weeks to go until the grand event on 15 March 2025, we were invited to the heart of the action: a tour of the carnival’s vibrant workshop, located on Voortrekker Road in Maitland. And let us tell you, it’s not your average workshop – this is where the real wonder happens.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warm smiles of the crew, all dressed in dazzling, one-of-a-kind garments that practically screamed couture carnival.
These were no ordinary outfits; they were intricate works of art, each piece brimming with flair, colour and bold design – a prelude to the extravaganza that is the Cape Town Carnival.
The tour itself was a whirlwind of creativity. We were guided through the various stages of float construction, and trust us, there’s more to it than just glueing glitter onto a float!
First, the skeleton of each float is carefully crafted from steel, giving it structure and strength. This initial phase looks like something straight out of a mechanical dream.
Then, the team works their magic by adding fabric and other materials to bring the float’s vision to life – like a giant fabric-covered canvas slowly transforming before your eyes.
The final step? Painting, of course! The floats emerge as stunning, full-bodied masterpieces, with every inch shining with vibrancy and excitement. It’s like seeing a floating work of art come to life, step by step.

But the tour wasn’t all about steel and fabric – we were treated to some seriously impressive performances by the carnival dancers!
They brought energy and joy that instantly had us feeling the rhythm. Their moves were infectious, and the costumes they wore made us feel like we had stepped into a lively world of celebration and fun.
As the Cape Town Carnival celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, it’s safe to say it’s come a long way since its inception.
What started as a modest gathering has now transformed into a major cultural event, drawing people from all corners of the globe.
The carnival celebrates the vibrant culture, rich history and diverse people of Cape Town. It’s a dazzling display of dance, music, and, of course, incredible floats that light up the city’s streets.

And while the floats are undoubtedly one of the highlights, the carnival as a whole is about much more than just the spectacle.
It’s about bringing communities together, showcasing local talent and giving everyone a chance to revel in the joy and freedom that Cape Town is known for.
As they gear up for their 15th year, this year’s carnival promises to be bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before.
So mark your calendars for March 15, 2025, because the Cape Town Carnival is set to take over the streets in the most spectacular way.
If you thought you knew what Cape Town was all about, think again – this year’s carnival is set to redefine the city’s festive spirit.
