The Cape Flats Book Festival, now in its fifth year, is currently taking place until 1 February 2026, transforming West End Primary School in Mitchell’s Plain into a vibrant hub of storytelling and creative expression, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The festival not only celebrates local talent but also champions the importance of literacy as a pathway to empowerment and social change within the community.
The annual festival is an indispensable platform for emerging voices in South Africa, showcasing a remarkable array of authors, poets, educators, and readers.
With 63 sessions scheduled and participation from 113 authors, poets, and facilitators, the event promises to engage attendees in meaningful discussions around identity, language, history, and social dynamics. All sessions are free, making it accessible to everyone in the community.
Ricardo Mackenzie, the MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport, highlighted the significance of the festival, saying, ‘The Cape Flats Book Festival is a space where young people see themselves reflected in stories, where local writers are affirmed, and where reading becomes a tool for empowerment and opportunity,’
Mackenzie reiterated the province’s commitment to fostering a culture of reading and creative expression through tangible initiatives like this festival.
By hosting events in community spaces, the Cape Flats Book Festival aims to break down barriers to access and cultivate a passion for reading among youth and budding writers. ‘Literacy is foundational to education, economic participation, and social cohesion,’ Mackenzie added.

This collaborative spirit reflects the festival’s ethos of inclusivity and community engagement.
The Cape Flats Book Festival is not just about celebrating authorship; it’s an invitation to the community to embrace the power of stories and literacy as tools for personal and social transformation.
