Cape Town’s newest immersive art event is bringing creativity into a home setting
According to a Facebook post by CapeTownMagazine.com, a new immersive art experience coming to Cape Town this May is aiming to make contemporary art feel more welcoming, social and family-friendly.
The two-day event, titled Beyond The Screen, will take place on Friday, 8 May and Saturday, 9 May and is being described as Cape Town’s first private salon-style art experience.
Instead of using a traditional gallery setup, the exhibition will transform a lived-in space into an interactive environment where visitors can move through art in a more relaxed and conversational way.
The concept reflects a growing shift within Cape Town’s creative scene, where younger audiences are increasingly drawn to experiences that feel immersive and personal rather than formal or intimidating.
Exploring life in the digital age

The exhibition is curated around five different bodies of work created by self-taught artist Sar La Rouge.
Her pieces combine collage techniques with digital tools, including AI-assisted creative processes, and will be displayed on materials such as perspex, metal and illuminated lightboxes.
The exhibition explores themes connected to screen culture, memory and the way technology shapes everyday life.
Some installations are even positioned around a couch setting to mirror how many people consume digital content seated, absorbed and often disconnected from the world around them.
The theme is likely to resonate strongly with modern audiences who spend much of their lives balancing online and offline spaces.
A gallery experience designed for families too

One of the event’s biggest draws may be its family-friendly approach.
Saturday’s programme will include lawn games, a children’s play area and collage workshops where kids can create their own artworks.
The addition of interactive activities for children offers something different from the typical gallery experience and opens the door for families who may not usually attend art exhibitions.
In Cape Town, where weekend entertainment often centres around markets, restaurants and outdoor spaces, this event adds a creative alternative that combines art with community engagement.
Live music and a social atmosphere
Friday evening’s opening event is expected to offer a more curated social experience, complete with drinks, canapés and live electric cello performances by Dorette Roos.
The musician will reinterpret familiar songs throughout the evening, adding another immersive layer to the exhibition.
The salon-style format where art, music and conversation exist together has become increasingly popular globally as creatives search for ways to make art spaces feel more interactive and inclusive.

Supporting a Hout Bay initiative
Beyond the exhibition itself, the event will also support a local cause.
Tickets start from R50, with proceeds going to The Bridge, an orphanage initiative based in Hout Bay.
At a time when community-driven creative events continue to grow across Cape Town, the exhibition highlights how art spaces are increasingly being used not only for expression, but also for social impact.
