Jungle Theatre Company’s latest performance, Makhulu Indlovu, promises to be a captivating and culturally rich experience for all who attend.
Based on a Kenyan folktale, the play follows a herd of elephants who embark on a journey to lay their matriarch’s bones to rest and, in doing so, heal the wounds of the past and re-establish their bonds with humans.
Written and directed by emerging artist Heather Gielink, the production also features talented cast members Noxolo Magadla, Zizipho Gcasamba and Marvin Safoor.
This project gives a voice to previously disadvantaged women of colour, who use the opportunity to explore their African heritage by working with a Kenyan folktale as the point of departure.
The result is a modern folktale that expresses a new connection to cultural and natural heritage for future generations.

Makhulu Indlovu is intended to be a powerful metaphor for our current economic crisis and encourages young people to draw on their own heritage to find solutions to modern issues.
The story is told using English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, with live African music, physical theatre and an elephant mask.
But that’s not all – a ticket also includes access to Bongi Bird, a fun and energetic performance that invites children to dance and fly like the titular character.
With a creative bird beak mask and wings, Bongi Bird inspires healthy habits such as eating well, exercising and boosting immune systems through interactive clapping and singing.
