Cape Town’s “bicycle mayor” Sindile Mavundla invites the City to join him, Premier Alan Winde, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Minister of Mobility Daylin Mitchell on a bike ride from Observatory to the Civic Centre.
Sindile Mavundla started Khaltsha Cycles in 2017. Khaltsha Cycles strives to make cycling more affordable by restoring old bicycles and funding them for those who cannot afford to. Their flagship programme, #learn2cycle, has taught hundreds of people how to ride bicycles.
The ride from Hartleyvale Stadium falls in South Africa’s transport month. It aims to promote how we can make cycling a safe and viable transport alternative for Cape Town.
For those who are physically able to do so, ditching the traffic and cycling to work has many health and economic benefits. It will also help to reduce the strain of Cape Town’s increasing traffic volumes.
Mavundla says: “Cape Town is an aspiring cycling city with great potential to lead, promote and encourage utility cycling as an alternative mode of transport. Part of turning this idea into a reality involves collaborating with the City of Cape Town to design and build infrastructure that makes cycling safe and accessible, so more people are able to start cycling.”
