Makers Landing Kids Demo Classes
From 9am at Makers Landing, the Lalela Leadership Programme will start with 15 grade 9 learners from Vista High School partnering with 15 learners from the programme to carry out a workshop on the ‘Heart Maps’ curriculum.
A Heart Map is an artwork that you create for someone else that represents four chambers of their heart: their identity/background; talents and passions; fears and challenges; and dreams/goals for the future. Lalela Heart Maps are designed to connect people on a meaningful heart-to-heart artful journey.
Public Engagement Canvas: From 10am, a big approximately 2 x 2m canvas that poses a question about South Africa’s youth will be set-up with paint and markers at Makers Landing that the public will be invited to respond and contribute to in writing or visually. Lalela’s leadership learners are going to brainstorm and come up with a simple and evocative question that they as the youth of South Africa feel is important to ask and get the public thinking about. A few of the leadership learners and a Lalela staff member will be present to manage the activity and answer any questions.
At 2pm, the V&A will be handing over a cheque to the value of R30 000 to Lalela Project – funding a classroom for a year.
On top of that, a Sourdough Pizza class and a Cake Decorating class will also be offered. Join the Sourdough Pizza class, hosted by Wild Yeast from 11am to 12.30pm. Each child (13 to 18 years) will learn about natural yeast, and will leave with a take home starter and instructions on how to feed it, as well as making their own sourdough pizza. Bookings are essential and tickets cost R250. If you are between 12 and 18 years old, you can also join The Charming Chef in the Enchanted Kitchen and learn to decorate your own mini cake from 2pm to 3pm at Makers Landing. You will learn how to use fillings, gain piping skills and how to make chocolate garnishes. Bookings are essential and tickets cost R230.
Lastly, don’t miss out on the incredible live performances that will also take place on the day from 12pm onwards. Look forward to performances by Liam Quickfall from 12pm to 12.20pm, Luh’ra from 12.45pm to 1.30pm, and Kujenga from 2pm to 4pm; find out more about these artists.

The Justice Desk Activ8 – Power of Youth
The Justice Desk, an award-winning human rights organisation, was started with the belief that the youth have the power and ability to make a real and lasting difference in their communities and world. TJD’s mission has always been to promote the power of everyday activism. Their movement is filled with young people from across South Central Africa who are committed to educating, empowering, and inspiring their generation – and those yet to come, to lead their own change!
From the many projects run by TJD, and out of the thousands of young activists in their campaigns, eight changemakers were chosen to form TJD’s “Activ8” movement.
The Activ8 is a group of young human rights defenders, who have done tremendous advocacy work, who have chosen to champion and raise awareness to various issues that affect children in our world today. They are committed to creating long-lasting change and dedicating their lives to advocating for the fundamental human rights of all people!
On Youth Day, The Justice Desk will be launching the Activ8 – where these young activists will have the opportunity to amplify their voices and publicly commit to creating true and lasting positive change.
