For the past seven years, Food Lover’s Market and its dedicated partners have been engaged in extensive fundraising efforts throughout the month of May, culminating in World Hunger Day on 28 May.
The beneficiary of these funds is Food Forward SA, an organisation committed to reducing hunger in South Africa by securing high-quality food in a safe and cost-effective manner for those in need. With more than 30 million food-insecure individuals in South Africa, the severity of hunger and food insecurity in the country cannot be overstated.
Food Lover’s Market kicked off this year’s drive with more than two million meals already banked thanks to generous contributions from partners, including its esteemed legacy partner, Tru-Cape.

Food Lover’s Market has emphasised that, in light of recent Stats SA data revealing a 14-year high of 13.4% food inflation in South Africa (January 2023), as well as a study from the University of Witwatersrand’s School of Physiology highlighting food insufficiency experienced by one in every five households, the importance of addressing the issue of hunger becomes even more apparent.
That is why Food Lover’s Market has made significant efforts to make a difference.
‘Over the last six years, the Food Lover’s Market Hunger Month Campaign has raised 6 190 063 meals donated, with 2 515 203 of these meals donated in 2022 alone – but this is not enough, and we can do better,’ said Kate Marais, CSI Manager for Food Lover’s Market.
Each year on 28 May, World Hunger Day, Food Lover’s Market matches every meal that customers buy, essentially doubling the impact of their donations.
This year, Food Lover’s Market has successfully secured the provision of 2 million meals through its trusted sponsorship partners, ensuring that every contribution goes directly to benefiting Food Forward SA. Building upon this achievement, Food Lover’s Market now presents an additional option for those who wish to make an even greater impact.
Shoppers have the choice to purchase or donate meals, actively supporting this wonderful cause and joining the fight against hunger. By investing a mere 56 cents, individuals can provide nourishment to those in need and become an integral part of the collective effort.
In 2022, Food Lover’s Hunger Month impressively raised 2.5 million meals, and this year has already achieved the remarkable milestone of 2 million meals. It is a testament to the unwavering dedication and support received from the community, suppliers and partners.
People are strongly encouraged to donate a meal for only 56 cents, rallying together in the collective effort to combat hunger. By uniting our efforts, we can truly make a significant difference and help nourish the lives of those who are in need.
