What started as an initiative to help homeless people have at least one meal a day, has expanded into an even bigger project serving humanity from the ground.
Ladles of Love has launched a new programme which aims to help farmers grow better produce. The programme aims to create healthy compost from food waste and turn it to a nutrient-rich compost.
Upon researching, the organisation said they realised that one of the biggest problems facing urban farmers is poor soil. The initiative is also giving residents an opportunity to form part of this urban farming ecosystem.
“Using the Feed The Soil Food Waste Tool Kit, you actively form part of our new urban farming ecosystem. From paying forward your organic waste, to turning into nutritious compost and buying back the fresh produce grown from it,” they said.
They’ve partnered with Zero To Landfill Organics (ZTL Organics) – a company that recycles food waste, diverting it from landfill and making compost to feed the soil. The company will be assisting them by turning the waste they collect from suburban households to a nutrient-rich compost. The compost will then be delivered to our urban farms that will form part of their sustainable farming charities network.
“The new soil will then be used by our network of urban farms to help grow better organic produce for their local soup kitchens and markets,” they said.
Their Feed The Soil Food Waste ToolKit is R200 and includes 5 litre Food Waste Bin 25 litre storage bin, bag of sawdust and bag of bokashi. You can purchase it here
