Every year on Mandela Day (and during Mandela month), Rise Against Hunger (RAH) is assisted by people giving up 67 minutes of their time to pack food for school feeding schemes.
This year, RAH will set up inside Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
16 teams of 20 volunteers, from 12 companies, have already confirmed that they will be donating their time on the day. In total, RHA can count on 330 volunteers on the day – an amazing way to kick off a month of giving.
RAH estimates it will pack 52 000 meals in Cape Town on Mandela Day itself, but nationally over the course of the month their target is to pack 1-million meals.
Volunteers will work in production lines using funnels, scales and heat sealers. The 52 000 meals they hope to pack on the day will provide five meals a week to 226 children in Early Childhood Development facilities. The meals packed over the month will feed 4 873 children for a year.
Each specially formulated meal pack will include rice, soya, split peas, lentils and a vitamin packet which adds 21 vitamins and minerals to each meal. Each meal provides the daily nutrients necessary for the wellbeing of a child.
“We are very excited to be hosted by Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront this year, especially since it’s our first big public event since Covid changed our lives. We believe Makers Landing is the perfect venue and we truly appreciate the V&A’s commitment to making an impact on hunger in the Western Cape by providing such a spectacular venue,” says Brian Nell, Rise Against Hunger CEO.
