The Service Dining Rooms has tirelessly fed Cape Town’s growing unemployed population with nutritious meals for more than 80 years.
The Service Dining Rooms (SDR) is a soup kitchen in Cape Town that makes a world of difference by serving street-based individuals nutritious meals and implementing developmental programmes that create opportunities for them.

Doris Syfret founded Service Dining Rooms in 1935 after she realised the need for cheap yet nutritious meals for Cape Town’s growing number of unemployed people. For what was known then as a “tickey,” people in need could exchange a ticket for a hot plate of nourishing food.
SDR’s renowned red brick building is located at 82 Canterbury Street. Its kitchen, dining rooms, offices and outside facilities have been refurbished in recent years with the help of donations from community and church organisations.
Not only has its kitchen and team filled thousands of hungry stomachs, but the organisation continually implements initiatives and projects that work to build a stronger community.
SDR has future plans to develop additional programmes, execute interior upgrades, document the stories of its regular guests, and address the challenges its community faces.
Service Dining Rooms does everything it can to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and ensures its community doesn’t go hungry.
