The prize is R10 000 and a live performance at the switch-on event and concert on the Grand Parade.
The Festive Lights Switch-On in Adderley Street, scheduled for Sunday, 1 December, will be brighter, more vibrant and funnier than before.
This comes as the City of Cape Town unveiled the People of Hope Comedy Competition, a new addition to this year’s festival line-up that will showcase the city’s diverse humour and leave audiences in stitches.
The competition is open to aspiring comedians of all ages who are ready to bring their best ‘hopeful humour’ to the stage. A unique take on ‘people of hope’ could win big – R10 000 for the first prize, with second and third place receiving R5 000 and R2 000 respectively. The top three also get the opportunity to showcase their talent at the Festive Lights Switch-On event.
‘This year’s Festive Lights Switch-On is about more than just lights – it’s about the people of Cape Town,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.
‘Our people are people of hope and express themselves through humour that shines through the heart of Cape Town. There’s something magical about laughing together – a shared experience – and as we Capetonians know how to have a good time, I’m keen to celebrate the talents that make this city so special and meet you all on the Grand Parade for a good chuckle and some excellent entertainment.’
Participants must submit a one-minute stand-up comedy video that artistically depicts the theme ‘People of Hope.’ Videos must be creative, family-friendly and free of inappropriate content, politics and religion – simply good, clean fun!
Entries must be submitted using Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or Twitter (X).
Most importantly, entries must tag the official Cape Town Festive Lights account (@CTFestiveLights) and include the hashtags #PeopleOfHopeLaugh #CTFestiveLights. It is not necessary to submit the entry on all platforms, however.
The deadline for entries is Friday, November 15, after which a top ten winner will be chosen to perform in a live ‘laugh-off’ at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday, 23 November.
Some of South Africa’s best comic talent, including Lunga Tshuka, Angel Campey and Stuart Taylor will judge the process.
Visit the official Cape Town Festive Lights Switch-On social media platforms for additional information on how to enter and a complete list of competition rules and restrictions.
