This summer, we’re all about having as much fun as we can, in the safest way possible. Everyone deserves to be taught basic water safety skills, regardless of financial limitations and access to bodies of water.
The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) free pop-up Survival Swimming lessons aim to do just that.
This initiative forms part of the institute’s Survival Swimming programme, which strives to equip adults and youth in underdeveloped areas with the basic water-safety skills needed to help themselves or rescue others.
The programme offers all the need-to-know basics of Survival Swimming. From propulsion, breath-control and orientation to extrication and drowning prevention methods.
Each session is 20 minutes long and free of charge.
“Our instructors are trained by our qualified senior Survival Swimming instructor and per international guidelines. They are competent swimmers that are also qualified in first aid, and adhere to all safeguarding practices,” says Survival Swimming Project Coordinator, Nazreen Adams.
Participation is on a first-come, first-serve basis and bookings are not necessary. The number of participants depends on the size of the pool and location.
Visit your nearest municipal pool and spot the instructors with their bright pink caps and costumes.
