Cape Town theatre audiences are getting a new reason to laugh, cringe and perhaps recognise a little of their own dating lives when First Date: The Musical makes its South African debut this October.
The Broadway musical comedy will run for a limited season at the Avalon Theatre at the Homecoming Centre from 21 October to 1 November, bringing a story of awkward encounters, unexpected romance and the chaos that can unfold when two strangers meet for the first time.
When a blind date becomes a musical
At the centre of First Date: The Musical are Aaron, a cautious man who takes relationships seriously, and Casey, a fearless serial dater.
Their blind date begins like an ordinary dinner but quickly becomes anything but ordinary. As the evening unfolds, friends, family members, exes and even the characters’ inner critics make their opinions known through song and dance.

Set inside a busy New York City restaurant, the production turns the familiar nerves and uncertainty of a first date into a fast-paced romantic comedy filled with music, humour and heart.
For producer Harley Ferguson, the subject is one that audiences can easily connect with.
‘Let’s face it – we’ve all had, or know someone who has had, an interesting dating experience,‘ Ferguson says.
A South African premiere with a rising local cast
The production is being presented by Origen Productions, in arrangement with DALRO (PTY) LIMITED.
The South African production is directed by Byron Bure, whose previous credits include RENT, Songs for a New World and Shrek The Musical.
The cast includes Emma Amber as Casey and Ethan Saunders as Aaron, alongside William Young, Kirsten Pienaar, Asanda Mngadi and Zoë Chetty.
Robert Shenton, Nikita Latimer and Ethan Dunk also join the company in supporting roles.
Behind the performers is a creative team that includes Musical Director Casey Wallace, Choreographer Angelica Hattingh and Assistant Choreographer Amber Morgan.
An evening built around laughter, romance and awkward moments
Rather than presenting a straightforward love story, First Date: The Musical plays with the unpredictable nature of meeting someone new.
The production promises an evening where romance, comedy and the sometimes-unhelpful thoughts that come with dating all collide.
Origen Productions says the show is aimed at anyone from happily single theatre-goers and hopeless romantics to those who have experienced their own disastrous dates.
The company, founded in 2022, has previously produced shows including You Should Go In, Call Me A Diva, Love Me Feed Me Never Leave Me, Trial & Error and The Marvelous Wonderettes.
The Marvelous Wonderettes received two Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nominations, while Love Me, Feed Me, Never Leave Me received a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the 2025 National Arts Festival.
Early bird tickets available
For those planning a date night or simply looking for a night out at the theatre, an Early Bird Special is available at R290 per ticket when booked before 21 September.
Performances run from Wednesday to Saturday at 19:30, with an additional Saturday performance at 15:00. Sunday shows are scheduled for 14:30 and 18:00.
The production carries an age advisory of 12+.
First Date: The Musical will be staged at the Avalon Theatre, Homecoming Centre, Cape Town, from 21 October to 1 November.
