Cape Town’s culinary reputation has reached new heights, with the city securing fourth place in Time Out Travel’s annual ranking of the ‘World’s 20 Best Cities for Food Right Now.’
The list, released on Tuesday, placed New Orleans at the top, thanks to its rich cultural influences, followed by Bangkok and Medellín. Madrid completed the top five. The ranking was determined through a global survey assessing quality, affordability, and characteristics such as family-friendliness and innovation. Time Out’s panel of food critics, editors, and chefs also weighed in on the most exciting food destinations.
Cape Town’s food culture is shaped by diverse influences, with one local favourite standing out—the iconic gatsby, which even Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has praised. From street food to fine dining, the city continues to impress both locals and visitors.
This accolade adds to Cape Town’s growing list of global recognition in 2025. Earlier this year, the Labia Theatre was named among the world’s most beautiful cinemas, a Cape Town pizza earned a spot in the top 20 globally, and the city was crowned Time Out’s Best City in the World. Cape Town was also ranked as a top 10 destination for finding love, while a local coffee shop and restaurant received high praise on international lists.
With its ever-evolving food scene, Cape Town continues to make its mark as a world-class culinary destination.
