Massimo’s founder has announced his retirement after 17 years of serving Hout Bay, sharing the news directly with patrons on the restaurant’s official Massimo’s Facebook page, reports Cape {town} Etc.
In a heartfelt post dated 18 February, the team wrote: ‘The end of an era… and the beginning of an exciting new chapter.’
The message assured customers that ‘the same great food, the same heart, the same soul you’ve always loved’ will remain, as new custodians build on what has already been established.

The announcement prompted an outpouring of support from regulars who have marked milestones at the restaurant over nearly two decades. Mia Faull shared:
‘You’ve been a huge part of our lives. We came to you the day that my youngest daughter came out of hospital… We’ve come for countless birthday celebrations, Mother’s Day lunches, dinners with friends.’
Others praised the founders’ generosity and humour. Jackie Whales thanked them ‘for the smiles, great food… and for supporting us at Friends of the Rivers of Hout Bay.’ Christopher Pool recalled advice that ‘the best pizza only has 2 toppings. True fact that!’
While ownership transitions, the message to customers remains clear: the spirit of Massimo’s continues. For many in Hout Bay, it is not simply a restaurant changing hands, but a community landmark turning the page.
