The Newlands swimming pools in Cape Town have closed to the public again after just reopening from being closed for five years. This time the closure is due to a suspected chlorine gas leak as reported by News24.

The five-year closure was due to a revamp and repairs to the swimming pools which included repair of the filtration pipes, removal of old walls for new tiling inside the pools, paving of the pool decks, waterproofing of all structural and expansion joints as well as the pool basin and upgrades of the electrical reticulation system.
Mayco member for Community Service and Health, Patricia van der Ross, said that a chlorine gas leak was detected in the plant room which called for the immediate closure of the pools.
Van der Ross said, “Work is underway to address the issue, and it is projected that the pool may open [hopefully] on 1 December, subject to quality assessments. The City apologises for any inconvenience caused but assures the public that everything possible is being done to open the facility doors as soon as possible.”
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department said that they are in the process of updating the operating times of the swimming pools in preparation for the summer season.
