Cape Town is no stranger to packed arenas and headline acts, but comedy on this scale, curated, intentional, and rooted in something bigger, is a different kind of moment. On 18 April, Laughter Is Culture arrives in Cape Town at GrandWest with an ambitious promise: one stage, fourteen of South Africa’s top comedians, and a crowd ready to laugh, reflect and connect.
David Kau, a well-known figure in local comedy circles, is at the centre of it all, serving as the MC for the event. Over the course of his nearly three-decade career, Kau has seen stand-up in South Africa go from small-scale community hall appearances to international Netflix specials.
He anchors the entire experience as host, leading the audience through what looks to be a well-planned evening rather than merely providing continuity between performances.
The lineup features a stacked list of South African comedians as headliners, including:
- Loyiso Gola
- Mpho Popps
- Celeste Ntuli
- Skhumba Hlophe
- Trevor Gumbi
- Chris Foresst
This stacked lineup of comedians, many of whom have reached international acclaim, will be supported by more local talent, including:
- Kagiso KG Mogadi
- Dillan Oliphant
- Virgil Prins
- Roni Modimola
- Ntosh Madlingozi
- Yaaseen Barnes
- Mbali Gudazi

Comedy has historically served as a forum for challenging discussions in South Africa, where humour is used to explore common experiences, everyday frustrations, and political realities. It’s a place where the audience can recognise themselves in addition to laughing, where the absurdity of daily life is called out. Thus, the name, Laughter Is Culture, is the perfect title for the upcoming event.
‘Comedy has always been a powerful way for South Africans to process life,’ says Kau. ‘This event is about celebrating that on a massive scale.‘
In addition to the event, Laughter Is Culture will also be investing in the future of the industry, hosting a full-day Comedy Skills Workshop on 14 April at Hotel Sky in Johannesburg. Running from 8:30 am to 5 pm, the workshop is aimed at rising voices in South African stand-up, providing practical training and insight into writing, performance, and the business.
Along with Kau, the workshop will be facilitated by industry professionals who have lived the experience of the industry. These facilitators include:
- Kagiso Lediga
- Skhumba Hlophe
- Tumi Morake
- Sindiswa Mnguni
- Mark Banks
Developed in line with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the workshop is limited to 80 participants, giving attendees direct access to industry professionals who have built sustainable careers from the ground up. Applications for the workshop are available here.
