Back by popular demand, the world-first all-female electric cello trio, Rosanthorn, will be performing at Oude Libertas on Friday January 25 2019.
Rosanthorn combines the talents of SAMA-Nominee Carol Thorns, Cape Town Philharmonic’s Dorette Roos and composer Anjulie Nock.
Their concert will feature guest artists singer Zami Mdingi from CODA Africa and pianist/violinist Kirsten Adams. After interval, guests will be treated to a performance of The Galaxy Dress, a magnificent new concept from Red Cello Productions featuring saxophonist, Judy Brown. This bedazzling act includes nearly 1000 lights individually tailored to create a dazzling ‘fashion meets music meets LED’ effect.
Rosanthorn have set out a compositional and technical journey to explore all that the Cello has to offer across multiple genres and timbres, with the help of South Africa’s top composers and producers. Their repertoire includes recordings and re-interpretations of works as varied as Vivaldi’s Double Concerto in G Minor, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek.
Their arrangement of Abdullah Ibrahim’s Mannenburg and Bright Blue’s Weeping was commissioned for the opening of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art. Anjulie Nock has composed new works such as Night Journey (with a stirring Game of Thrones feel) and an original Tango. The Parting, by Helmut Meijer, is a reflective, stripped-down, soulful composition which inspired their first music video.
This year saw Rosanthorn release their full album on iTunes (including 3 new songs: Dancing on My Own, African Medley and Secrets) and perform to standing ovations at Oude Libertas and The Drama Factory. Carol Thorns, member of Rosanthorn and director of Red Cello Productions says, “We are so privileged to have performed over ten times in 2018 at Zeitz MOCCA. This venue has become a firm favorite for us from a venue point of view with its epic setting and acoustics – it is the perfect fit for Rosanthorn Cello Trio and we never tire of performing under ‘the dragon.’  We aim to create and design original, dazzling concepts here at Red Cello Productions and our newest act, The Galaxy Dress has not only become instantly popular in South Africa, but was also successfully launched in the UK. Our first performance went down a storm in the South of Ireland. It has been a hugely exciting year and we are so looking forward to showcasing Rosanthorn’s latest music and this glittering act, The Galaxy Dress, at Oude Libertas.”
Tickets: R220 at Computicket.
The show starts at 8.15pm.
