Over 21 000 runners from around the globe will hit the streets, exploring the city’s diverse suburbs and landmarks on foot. While these athletes have trained for months to tackle the 42km challenge, marathon watching requires little to no effort at all. So, why not make a day of it and cheer them on?
Whether you’re a dedicated supporter or just looking for a fun day out, here’s everything you need to know about turning race day into Cape Town’s biggest block party while respecting road closures and supporting local businesses.
Pick your spot and cheer on the runners!
The marathon route winds through many vibrant parts of the city, offering plenty of great spots for spectators. Here are some of the best places to show your support:
The Start Line: Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point
The race kicks off bright and early on Fritz Sonnenberg Road, with runners heading towards Granger Bay. If you’re nearby, head to the vicinity of Main Road and Buitengracht Street to catch all the pre-race excitement. This area will be tightly controlled, so it’s best suited for locals who can walk over.
6.5km Mark: Off-ramp, N2
By the time runners hit the second hydration point, they’ll still be fresh and enjoying views of Table Mountain. If you’re near this spot, expect the first wave of runners to pass by around 9am.
14.2km Mark: Claremont Boulevard & Mill Street, Claremont
If your Sunday routine involves a gym session at Virgin Active in Claremont, you’re in luck! Cheer on runners as they pass the fourth hydration point between 7am and 10:30am, adding some extra energy to your morning workout.
17.5km Mark: Michael’s Restaurant & Rondebosch Park
Grab a coffee at Michael’s, which opens at 8am, and enjoy the race from the comfort of the sidewalk. It’s the perfect spot to relax while cheering on the marathoners.
20–22km Mark: Rondebosch Common
This stretch around Rondebosch Common is mentally tough for runners, as they’re just passing the halfway mark. Spectators here can provide much-needed motivation. The area will be buzzing with support from title sponsor Sanlam, so make your cheers count!
27–29km Mark: Albert Road / Newmarket Street, Salt River
At this point, many runners will start feeling the physical and mental strain. Show your support between 8am and 11am by clapping and cheering them through this fast, straight section of the route.
29.9km Mark: Darling Street
Darling Street, with its iconic landmarks, offers both history and a chance to witness the marathon action. Runners pass the Castle of Good Hope and Cape Town City Hall, where Nelson Mandela made his first speech as a free man. This is a fantastic spot for memorable photos, so grab a spot and wave as the runners go by Madiba’s statue.
30.7–34km Mark: Government Avenue onto Orange & Long Street
This year, the marathon takes runners through the serene Company Gardens, offering a shady reprieve. But the real excitement lies ahead on Long Street. Known for its lively vibe, Long Street will be a cheering hub, complete with an adidas cheer zone. Grab a coffee and watch as the athletes push through the ‘wall’ at this challenging stage. Most will pass by between 8am and 12pm.
34.2km Mark: Green Point Main Road
KFM’s cheer zone is set up at the 34.2km mark, and while runners may be getting close to the finish, they’ll still need that extra boost. With plenty of brunch spots nearby, this is a great place to relax and cheer on the athletes as they make their final push.
36.5–41.5km Mark: Beach Road / The Sea Point ‘Loop of Death’
The final few kilometres, nicknamed the ‘Loop of Death,’ are where the physical exhaustion sets in. Runners will need all the encouragement they can get as they pass through the last hydration station and push towards the finish. Your positive vibes will help them cross that line!
42km: The Finish Line, Vlei Road, Green Point
There’s no better place to witness the triumphant finish than at Vlei Road. Arrive early to grab a spot in the public seating area and cheer on both the elite racers and everyday heroes. The final cut-off is at 1:37pm, so stick around to encourage the last few runners across the line.
Tips for a spectacular race day
- Stay local: With road closures in place, avoid driving from one point to another. Choose a spot near where you live or work, and enjoy the race from there.
- Support local businesses: There are plenty of restaurants and cafés along the route. Why not grab a coffee or brunch while cheering on the runners?
- Bring your energy: Whether it’s a high-five or a word of encouragement, your support can make a huge difference to a runner’s day.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is not just a race – it’s a celebration of community, endurance and the spirit of the Mother City. So, mark your calendar for October 20, 2024, and get ready to be part of the city’s biggest block party!
