The highly anticipated fifth edition of the annual Spier Light Art festival is back until 10 April 2023. Enter an evocative nighttime adventure scattered across the historical wine farm daily, with good food and great wine on offer too.
Created by talented artists and designers from South Africa and beyond, the nocturnal collection features experimental light, sound and video to create an experiential display of evocative artworks.
It’s free to the public, and all pieces are outside, so the best time to visit is at dusk when you can catch both the sunset and the switching on of the lights.
Since its inception in 2018, artists have explored a range of subjects in intricate ways. Lately, the pandemic and other unknowns have led to works that are more introspective and abstract.
This year, these challenges have not disappeared, with Eskom and loadshedding providing brutal irony to curating a project about light and adding to the challenges and reflections of what it takes to live in a contemporary South Africa.
Exploring a selection of five themes, Spier Light Art delves into the ethereal and the whimsical; the conceptual; humanity’s changing relationship with technology; resilience in the face of adversity; enchantment and exuberance; and Spier’s unique history.
