The 37th edition of the Bayhill Premier Cup concluded with a thrilling climax at Athlone Stadium on Sunday, where local favourites Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town triumphed over Mamelodi Sundowns FC, securing a 1-0 victory in an electrifying match witnessed by a passionate crowd of 8 500 supporters.
This year’s tournament, which commenced on 1 April at Erica Park Stadium in Belhar, has once again solidified its status as the foremost U/19 football tournament on the African continent.
As the final whistle signalled the end of the match, the raucous cheers echoing around the stadium encapsulated the spirit of the tournament – a showcase of talent, perseverance, and community pride.
The event has become a cornerstone in Cape Town’s sporting calendar, celebrating not just football but also teamwork and sportsmanship among youth across the country.

The success of the Bayhill Premier Cup was praised by Francine Higham, City’s Mayco for Community Services and Health, who highlighted the invaluable role such tournaments play in nurturing young talent.
‘Our investment in sports facilities and events like this is an investment in the future of our youth. It helps to nurture talent, build character, and create meaningful opportunities for the next generation of South African football stars,’ she remarked.
‘I want to thank and commend everyone involved for their continued passion, dedication, and contribution to the game.’
The day was not only filled with excitement on the field but also celebrated the achievements and performances of standout players during a prestigious awards ceremony.
Denovian Davids took home the accolade for top goal scorer, while Setshaba Gaseitsiwe was awarded the Player of the Tournament. In a nod to officiating excellence, Akhona Khuse was named Assistant Referee of the Tournament, and Sophumelela Gxowa was acknowledged as Referee of the Tournament.
Among other accolades, Gareth Ncanca, the Head Coach from Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town, earned the title of Coach of the Tournament, showcasing the significant impact of effective coaching in shaping young players’ futures.
Meanwhile, the Most Promising Amateur Team title went to Stanturf United, and Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town’s stellar performance earned them the title of Team of the Tournament.
Additionally, the tournament’s awards extended beyond the main competition, honouring top teams in various subcategories, including the Bruyns Plate and Pat Connolly Mid-Section Finals, further emphasising the broad talent pool present throughout the competition.
Mayco for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in making the event a resounding success. ‘It was a celebration of sport, competition, friendship, and unity and deserves its spot among the annual highlights on the calendar,’ he said.
