A team of South African para surfers competed in the World Para Surf Championship in Pismo Beach, California, this December. Roxy Davis, the founder of the Roxy Davis Foundation, led the team as its head coach.
The Roxy Davis Foundation partnered with Surf Emporium to raise funds to get the athletes and support team to the event.
This was the first time that South Africa sent a team to the championship. The team consisted of nine male and five female athletes, as well as six support team members.
Team South Africa had three finalists take the podium:
- Jean-Paul Veaudry: Placed second in the Men’s Stand 2 division
- Tracy Lee McKay: Placed third in the Women’s Prone 1 division
- Douglas Hendrikz: Placed forth in the Open Sit division
Each athlete on Team South Africa contributed to the team’s fifth-place finish and overall score.
