As we stride into early September, spring fashion trends are blossoming as the looks for the warmer seasons start popping off. Now in the Mother City, since we had a taste of toasty weather a little earlier (pre the snowfall, of course, bless our City’s indecisive weather) we’ve seen some of these trends already. However, they’re about to be a lot more present as stores rake in new stock and spring officially takes its rightful seat in the season’s front row.
We’re looking at inspiration from the 70’s, Y2K (2000s inspiration) and of course Tik Tok’s aesthetics. This spring is set to be a twist of a collaboration of decades, with either powerful minimalism, or ice cream store-inspired pastel. The Mother City loves a good look, and so whatever the guideline trend might be, there’s no doubt Cape Town will remix these ideas in the best way. Here’s what to look out for (which sounds dangerous, but is actually exciting).
The miniskirt (and its remixes)
The most important skirt of 2021, according to fashion writer Brunnette from Wallstreet, is the miniskirt, and there is a closet of renditions that we can expect to take spring by storm.
Pleated minis

The pleated mini skirts are likely going to be all over the scene, oozing a more feminine and playful take on athleisure for some looks. It’s really the uniform many of us would’ve got detention for.

Taking a cue from the current alternative aesthetic and love of streetwear’s oversized tees, we also have the mashup of the femme grunge aesthetic if you pair the pleated with a baggy T-shirt. Playful at the bottom, and a statement at the top? We love to see it.

However, if we’re going bad and boujee, there’s no reason not to add a cardigan for effect.
The leather mini

Ah, we see you 70’s influence. According to publication What to Wear, this variation of the miniskirt is one of the most popular of 2021. You can opt for vegan leather too to stay environmentally on-trend. The faux leather mini will probably cruise onto various scenes in different patterns and brighter colours, or extremely minimalist (this spring is all about bright or very plain after all). Whatever your flavour, pair with GoGo boots if you want to be the dancing queen, or sneakers if that’s your main squeeze.
Statement baggies

Backed by Vogue, statement baggies, the prime of streetwear, are still thriving. We’ve seen cargo pants and wide-legged looks around for a while now, but it seems that the statement baggies are still well-loved. For the most part, the fashion world is over overtly tight bottoms, and good riddance. Maybe 2010 skinny jeans will, unfortunately, make a comeback one day, but for now, it’s all about securing the baggies.

Pantsuits

As Cosmo writes, the blazer and wide-legged bottoms are well in. The pantsuit or power suit marvels onto the scene stemming from a 70’s influence. For sneakerheads, it’s one of the trends that can have you mixing and matching your kicks. Going for an interview at 10 and a jog at 11? This look is yours.
Flare

Flare is surely in the air, as part of the 70’s revival. According to stylecaster, flare plants are spring’s biggest trend for 2021 and the Mother City, in particular, has been noteably obsessed.

What can definitely be expected, is animal prints taking on the flare scene this spring. This trend has lapped over from our winter season, and the fiercest of the flare is roaring in Cape Town.
Minimalist pairings

For those who live in minimalism, minimalist pairings have their place this spring. The runways predicted ‘buttercream’ as one of the minimalist colours of the season.

Biker shorts

If you were worried about biker shorts being last season, worry not. They’re still steady and going strong as per InStyle and thank goodness for this. It’s all fun and games to wear denim shorts from time to time, but the comfort of the biker aesthetic remains unparalleled.
Halternecks

Since last summer, halternecks have been everywhere. As Vogue Uk notes, the Y2k influence has seen a stealthy return of the halterneck. It’s spicy, it’s Hollywood, and it’s spring’s love.
Happy spring!
