President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation tonight, Tuesday, 22 March 2022, on developments in South Africa’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the President, a meeting was held earlier today with the mayors, premiers, ministers and other stakeholders.
The restrictions made to COVID-19 regulations are as follows:
- All citizens are urged to be vaccinated and to get the booster vaccine dose
- Further vaccinations can play a role in allowing the country to ease restrictions and open the economy
- Indoor and outdoor events and venues can take up to 50% of its capacity
- Guests must have a proof of vaccination or present a negative COVID9 19 test – if not, only 1 000 people and 2 000 people will be allowed indoors and outdoors respectively. This applies to sports gatherings, conferences and music performances etc
- A maximum of 200 people are allowed at a funeral
- There is a two hour limit to funeral services
- No night vigils or post-funeral gatherings are permitted
- Wearing masks indoors remains mandatory, but wearing them outdoors is no longer compulsory
- A one-meter social distance must still be maintained between people, apart from schools (physical distancing);
- Travellers entering SA must show proof of vaccination or a PCR test. Those entering who want a vaccination can get one from Wednesday
Ramaphosa says the government’s response to the pandemic depends on how infections rise and drop. “For two years our lives have been shaped by this pandemic”, he says, further adding that SA has seen more than 100 000 COVID-19 deaths.
