Fire crews have brought a vegetation fire on the Du Toitskloof mountain under control, allowing all previously affected roads to reopen as monitoring continues overnight, Cape {town} Etc reports
The blaze, which moved down the mountain slopes toward the Paarl side, prompted a coordinated response from the Drakenstein Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, supported by the Cape Winelands District Municipality and local farmers. Firefighters remain on scene as a precaution, keeping watch for any flare-ups.
‘All roads have now been reopened to traffic. Please proceed with caution,’ authorities confirmed in an update issued after containment was achieved.
The fire had earlier crossed the mountain in two areas on the Paarl side, raising concern about its potential spread. Quick action by crews on the ground, supported by aerial resources, helped stabilise the situation before conditions could worsen.
Two helicopters were deployed to provide aerial assistance where visibility allowed, while ground teams positioned themselves strategically along the fire line. Fire officials noted that strong winds and poor visibility complicated firefighting efforts throughout the day, as per Cape Town news.
Despite these challenges, crews managed to slow and contain the fire’s advance.
‘Drakenstein firefighters remain on scene as the Du Toitskloof fire is now under control,’ the update said, adding that the area will continue to be monitored through the night.
Authorities also acknowledged the role played by residents and surrounding farming communities during the response. A message of appreciation was extended to community members who supplied firefighters with water, energy drinks, snacks and food while crews worked long hours under demanding conditions.
As traffic resumes through the area, motorists have been urged to remain alert. Fire services have emphasised that while the immediate threat has eased, vigilance remains essential until conditions are fully stable.
