As a precautionary measure, Bakoven Beach has been closed to the public until further notice. The temporary closure is due to an electrical failure at the Beta sewer pump station as a result of continuous loadshedding.

A Health Warning sign has been erected to alert the public to the situation, and City Health will be taking water samples on a daily basis for water quality testing until the levels are within the minimum requirement for recreational activities as determined by the National Water Quality Guidelines.
In the meantime, the City has closed the beach as a precaution, as contact with the water could result in potential gastrointestinal issues, and any person who enters the water does so at their own risk.
In the statement issued, the City noted how this latest beach closure highlights the challenges brought about by continued high levels of loadshedding on the City’s water and sanitation infrastructure.
The City says that every effort is being made to address spills as quickly as possible, and it is looking into a solution that will prevent overflows at this pump station that is in close proximity to the small swimming area.
A potential solution to the loadshedding issue at this pump station is the installation of an emergency inverter or uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system.
As loadshedding gets worse and lasts longer, sewer spills and overflows are likely to happen, even though backup plans are in place.
Electricity is required for the sewer pump stations in the City to operate efficiently.
