In a tragic turn of events, a cyclist who sustained critical injuries in a catastrophic collision with a minibus taxi in Camps Bay has passed away.
The incident occurred on Monday morning along Victoria Road, and the news of the cyclist’s death has sent shockwaves through the local community.
The Western Cape SAPS has confirmed that a culpable homicide case is now being investigated, while no arrests have been made as yet.
Democratic Alliance MP and chairperson of Parliament’s police portfolio committee took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking update. ‘The cyclist that was critically injured by this reckless taxi driver yesterday has just passed away… Absolutely heartbreaking,’ they wrote.
This devastating confirmation comes after earlier reports outlined the horrific injuries sustained by the cyclist, which involved multiple life-threatening conditions and complex medical ramifications.
On Tuesday morning, Cameron, a local advocate for cyclist safety, detailed the severity of the cyclist’s injuries, reporting that he had undergone an amputation of his leg, suffered fractures in both arms, and faced critical liver damage. ‘He is still critical,’ Cameron added.
Witnesses and initial reports describe the taxi driver recklessly attempting to overtake several vehicles around a corner, leading to a direct collision with oncoming cyclists.
The Pulse Power Association, an organisation devoted to promoting cyclist safety, expressed their devastation at the news. ‘We are devastated by the news that Landon La Grange has passed away of injuries sustained in the crash along Victoria Road yesterday (Monday). Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and the cycling community,’ they said in an official statement.
They also urged kindness and compassion in light of the added miscommunication and sensationalism that often accompany such incidents on social media.
Cyclist faces life-altering injuries following taxi crash in Camps Bay
A cyclist is fighting for his life after a devastating collision with a minibus taxi along Victoria Road in Camps Bay on Monday morning, an incident that has sparked outrage, conflicting accounts, and renewed calls for road safety and responsible online behaviour.
The crash occurred at about 08:30 as a group of around 20 cyclists were travelling from Camps Bay towards Hout Bay.
The taxi was travelling in the opposite direction, from Hout Bay towards Camps Bay, when the collision happened.
According to Democratic Alliance MP and chairperson of Parliament’s police portfolio committee, Ian Cameron, the cyclist’s injuries were catastrophic.
‘One cyclist has just had to have his leg amputated due to this incident and this criminal driver. Both arms broken and massive liver damage. He is still critical,’ Cameron said.
He further alleged that the taxi driver had attempted to overtake several vehicles around a corner, driving into oncoming cyclists. Cameron argued that the charge should go beyond reckless and negligent driving, suggesting attempted murder should be considered.
However, a different version of events was provided by Camps Bay Police Station Commander, Captain Liaan Janse van Rensburg. Speaking to Nova News, he said the driver was not driving recklessly at the time.
‘The taxi overtook a vehicle, but he wasn’t driving recklessly. One of the cyclists was startled and fell in front of the taxi, which struck him. The cyclist has a fractured leg and was airlifted to hospital,’ he explained.
Police have confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving is under investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app anonymously.
The incident has also ignited debate online, with many social media users sharing unverified accounts, medical details, and alleged eyewitness versions of what happened.
Reacting to the online reaction, Jacques Weber, chairman of the Sea Point City Improvement District, posted a strongly worded message on Facebook calling for restraint and compassion.
‘This is not content. This is a person. Someone’s brother. Someone’s father. Someone’s son,’ Weber wrote.
He criticised the spread of graphic details and unconfirmed information, warning that sharing such content without consent crosses the line from awareness into exploitation.
‘We’ve blurred the line between awareness and exploitation. Between concern and curiosity. Between informing and invading,’
Weber urged the public to think carefully before sharing sensitive details, asking people to consider whether they would want their own injuries and circumstances circulated online before their families were even informed.
