Eskom has announced that stage 6 loadshedding will be implemented from 12pm on Wednesday until further notice. The utility said that this is due to a high number of breakdowns and the necessity to strictly preserve the remaining emergency generation reserves.

According to News24, Eskom overspent on the diesel stocks that power gas turbines. For the purpose of preventing load shedding, the turbines offer backup power. In comparison to a revised budget of R11.1 billion, the company has spent R12 billion on diesel since 1 April 2022.
Until next April, it has no additional funds to purchase new diesel stocks.
Eskom has requested R19.5 billion from the National Treasury to fuel its emergency power plants with diesel, but last week Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana predicted that the request would not likely be granted.
