Update:
The times and dates for the road closures during Parliament’s first sitting at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Friday, 14 June have been announced.
On Wednesday evening, from 6pm, roads that will be closed are:
- The two left lanes on Walter Sisulu Avenue at Lower Long Street, towards Heerengracht Street with only the right lane that will be open to traffic. On Friday, 14 June and Saturday, 15 June, this lane could be closed as well.
- Lower Long Street will be closed from FW De Klerk Boulevard towards Walter Sisulu Avenue, along with FW De Klerk Boulevard being closed at Heerengracht Street, with local access only.
- The left lane along Heerengracht Street between the Walter Sisulu Avenue traffic circle and FW De Klerk Boulevard as well as the right lane at the MyCiTi depot along FW De Klerk Boulevard will be closed.
- On Friday, 14 June, at 9am, the left lane on the elevated freeway next to the Convention Centre will be closed.
The road closures will be in place until the events at the CTICC have fully concluded, as reported by EWN.
The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) will host the inaugural sessions of both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces this Friday, as declared by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo earlier this week.

This event marks the swearing-in of MPs and the election of the president, adhering to the Constitutional requirement that the first sitting must occur within 14 days following the announcement of election results.
In the wake of the ANC’s failure to secure an outright majority in the general elections, political parties have been engaged in frenzied efforts to forge coalition governments.
In anticipation of these proceedings, Parliament officials are diligently preparing the CTICC for Friday and Saturday’s sessions of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. This relocation of parliamentary business from the Cape Town City Hall has been necessitated by the ceremonial nature of the swearing-in process.
Given the significance of these events, certain road closures have been proposed to facilitate smooth operations.
Roads affected:
Walter Sisulu Street at Lower Long Street towards Heerengracht Street will see the closure of all lanes except the right lane.
Similarly, Lower Long Street will be closed from FW de Klerk Boulevard towards Walter Sisulu Avenue, while local access only will be permitted in the opposite direction.
Additional closures will affect FW de Klerk Boulevard at Heerengracht Street and the left lane along Heerengracht Street between the Walter Sisulu traffic circle and FW de Klerk Boulevard.
At the MyCiTi depot along FW de Klerk Boulevard, the right lane will be restricted to general traffic, with specific arrangements for entry and exit to the Remote Search Park.
Motorists are advised to steer clear of the Foreshore area and seek alternative routes, especially during peak hours.
