Fire crews were on high alert along the slopes of Signal Hill after a vegetation fire last night was successfully contained, with emergency teams now focused on monitoring the area for any possible flare-ups, reports Cape {town}Etc.
According to a post via Facebook by Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith, the City mounted a full-scale response shortly after the fire was reported, despite Table Mountain National Park activating its own emergency partners.
The decision was driven by concerns for residents living along the urban fringe, where shifting wind conditions and steep terrain can quickly change the behaviour of a fire.
As noted by JP Smith, eight major pumpers, supported by six water tankers, were deployed during the firefighting operation. Once the immediate threat had been brought under control, crews were repositioned in the vicinity of the Noon Gun area to monitor conditions and respond swiftly should the situation change
Smith explained that continuous replenishment is essential under these conditions, particularly when access routes are narrow and uneven.
Smaller, all-wheel-drive water tankers, specifically designed for rugged landscapes, were used to ensure fire engines could remain operational throughout the response.
Although the fire had stopped spreading, authorities maintained a visible overnight presence as a precaution against possible re-ignition.
Fire officials cautioned that contained blazes can still present risks, particularly if wind conditions shift or smouldering embers go unnoticed.
Residents and visitors were urged to remain cautious and to heed official guidance as monitoring continues. Further updates will be shared should conditions change.
Firefighting teams have been dispatched to tackle a vegetation fire burning in the mountainous area above Voetboog Street in Bo-Kaap.
SANParks Table Mountain National Park Fire Management confirmed that ground firefighting crews are on scene, working to contain the blaze. As a safety precaution, Signal Hill Road has been closed until further notice.
Authorities have issued an urgent appeal to all visitors currently on Signal Hill to evacuate the area immediately, citing safety risks as firefighting operations continue.
Members of the public are urged to avoid the area, comply with all official instructions and allow emergency services unobstructed access. Updates will be shared as the situation develops.
