South Africans might experience an unexpected return of loadshedding today after electrical faults forced Eskom to send out a power alert.
Five generating units tripped due to two electrical faults at Kriel Power Station this morning, resulting in a loss of 2 000 MW from the system.
The power utility initially stated “heavy mist conditions” as the possibly cause for the faults, but is investigating further.
They currently have 1 018MV on planned maintenance, while another 17 022 MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.
Loadshedding may be implemented at short notice if there is any further loss of generation capacity, or if some units fail to return to service as expected.
